Frank vs. bear

It’s not fake………..somebody obviously got out of hibernation !

Two days ago in the morning the weather was lovely and it felt like spring when Frank drove to the building site.

It had snowed a bit over night so first he couldn’t make out what the shadows in the snow were right beside one of the log piles until he got out of the truck…..

He wears size 11/12 shoes and it’s quite clear that our “neighbor” has a lot bigger feet and way bigger “nails”  !!!

Frank followed the bear tracks and was really impressed to see that the distance between each step of the hind paw (the above is the track of a hind paw) was about 5 ft. apart. So it must have been quite a big one.

You can still see the claws on top

The next print is unfortunately up in the shadow

He lost the tracks in the woods as there wasn’t much snow there and also was a bit hesitant as we’re sure that that bear must be really hungry after hibernation !

.

So you can imagine the first thing Frank did was get his bear spray out of the camper ……you can’t be too careful…….not forgetting that we’re in their territory !

Another nice finding were the “left overs” from beavers which we found now the snow was finally melting away ..no clue why they passed on those trees but they did create some great “woodwork”….some pics of that in the slideshow

After thinking that spring was finally on it’s way we got the “awakening” over night…..some snow , blizzard like wind conditions and we’re down to – 12 again that feel’s like – 25 when you’re outside.

Anyhow yesterday late afternoon I noticed that the small lake in front of the cottage we’re at at the moment, had broken up and an ice bank kind of looked like a little atoll with bright white sand and deep blue water and I took a picture………….well when I showed Frank the pic he looked at it for a while , looked back at me  (the pragmatic guy with no imagination at all 😉 ) and just said ” Yeah sure…..white sand beaches …..ever seen birch and maple trees on an atoll…….I think what you have is cabin fever”…..hmmmm, maybe 😉

Yesterday late afternoon…………and I still think it looks like a beautiful little atoll

Now sixteen hours later I looked out again and was totally amazed how much the ice had shifted due to the strong winds

…and now it’s gone

Really do hope that the wind will die off soon and it get’s a bit warmer……only a week left to get the remaining logs peeled and today Frank was busy with snow removal again.

Weather forecast is still calling for some tricky weather so we’ll just have to wait and see ….that’s nature 🙂

Loving your blog. We have had an offered excepted on land in CB. Hubby is originally from there. Our daughter would like to do off grid homesteading and we just want a small house for retirement lol. Can’t wait to read more of your blog and continue to save some of your links for when we are ready to build.
