Tiny cabin

Our first home in Nova Scotia….the cedar milled log home

We did live in a log home when we moved to Nova Scotia but it was a milled cedar log home.

A beautiful home no doubt and the smell of cedar is something you really can’t beat….but after seeing a couple of full log homes with the massive logs and the details when they were scribed……..we really got hooked.

After Frank had helped out and learned the basics of scribed log homes at a guy who was just building one in the area we decided we wanted to build something like that too….only as a tiny cabin for visitors………nothing fancy only a place to sleep and main thing…….we didn’t want to invest anything but the roofing……….everything else was to be self cut, harvested, peeled and the interior only from scratch.

Well a friend has a huge tree lot and Frank traded some work for some trees and then he was off to cut them and a friend with a logging truck brought them to us

But first we had to collect rocks for the foundation

The road to our property was to tight for the truck so the trees had to be unloaded down the road and we had to “shuttle” each tree up and down

next Frank “invented” a log trailer as the building site was in the middle of the woods and only accessible through a narrow foot path

Then we started cutting the sill logs and setting the first logs……..after fitting the floor joists

And then just went on setting log by log

And finally were able to set up the roof trusses….all built by hand

When that was finished …..the roof  came on …..

And then finally were able to get the inside done…….the tiles leftovers from friends, the stove and the door from an old cabin that was to be torn down, the window, mirror and chairs from a junk yard and just refurbished and the bed.…..leftovers from the logs

Well so after starting with that project in 2014 we had finished it in 2015 shortly before moving to Sweden and now we’re on the same path again……….only off grid and in the middle of the woods……but that’s part of the fun 🙂

What about you……done or doing anything similar…….let us know !!
