Hope you’re all doing well?
I know it’s been a while since the last blog post and I’d actually planned on writing one last week, but then something came up….I think you call it “life” 😉
A couple of you might already know about it from our Facebook page, but here a little more in detail….and as you know me in the meantime, this means it’ll be a long read 😉
Living in the Woods
Thursday (Aug. 29) a neighbour (so someone who lives on another lake 😉 ) sent me a text message (which is already weird as I usually never have cell service up here…so it was meant to be) asking me how things were and how I was dealing with the forest fire? She’d be down at her lake seeing smoke coming from our area and could even smell it.
Well, I was in the middle of an online training course and had no clue what she was talking about. So I just ran out, looked around, took a sniff, but couldn’t identify anything.
So I ran back to go on with my course, but the little voice in the back of my head didn’t shut up telling me to go take a look as it still might be possible and maybe I couldn’t see anything as the wind was blowing from the lake into the woods. We also had a really impressive thunder and lightning “event” two days earlier.
As I couldn’t focus on my course anymore anyhow I went out, jumped onto the ATV and decided to take a ride further up into the woods to have a look.
Well, I didn’t even drive far turning into one of the small paths that lead to a neighbour’s camp when I saw the flames and the smoke right in front of me. It wasn’t more than 200 m through the woods to our place, but due to the wind blowing the other direction I hadn’t noticed.
As it was further uphill I thankfully had cellphone reception and called 911. Dispatch put me through to the fire department, but then the “fun” started.
The lady on the other end just didn’t understand that I was in the middle of the woods, so I gave her my civic number and told her to send the fire trucks there and I’d meet up with them and lead them to the fire. She still didn’t understand and was asking me why I was in the woods, telling her I was living there but had a civic number. It had to be my house then that was on fire.
So while I was discussing this with her holding my phone in one hand, I tried to turn the ATV and get away from the fire to drive down through the woods to the main road. Thankfully halfway down I meet a guy from DNR who told me that a plane had spotted the smoke, but nobody knew where it really was coming from.
So I hung up on the lady, turned around again and brought the gentleman up to the spot where I had seen the flames. When I asked him if there was anything I could do he gave me a roll of emergency tape and asked me to flag the way so others would find it.
So again I drove off but decided to go down to the main road first because I wouldn’t make sense to flag in the woods when nobody knew how to get up there.
On my way down I called Frank at work because I knew that, even if the fire trucks in our area are small, they’d not be able to get over our small bridge in the middle of the woods, when they were loaded with water.
Frank would have to open up the logging road that was blocked with boulders and leads over the quarry in our area and would provide easy and safe access.
I didn’t see him coming, but it usually takes him about 40 min. to get from home to work…..he made it in 19 that day…..and he really must have been fast, as our game cam only showed a cloud of dust but never caught him on camera 😉
I just had arrived down at the gate at the main road when I already saw the first small fire truck rushing down the dirt road. I asked if they had any information where to go and as they denied I turned around and led the way. As Frank wasn’t there yet we had to take the small bridge and go the narrow road through the woods….and man that was tight for a truck that size. But even when the road got straight, I really felt for the drivers….we’re talking rocky unkempt overgrown old logging roads and only one way! So passing is hardly possible….and it turned out to be quite the task to organize which truck was coming or going if the other didn’t want to go backwards all the way through the woods.
Btw …. When I say “fire trucks and fire department” I’m talking VOLUNTEERS…..all of them!!!
It was around 5 pm when the first one rolled in and when I drove back down to finally start to flag the road the people of our and the neighbourhood community where rolling in …. I don’t have a clue how they all got there that fast, but man…..what a sight it was 🙂
Due to the narrow roads, it was a logistical nightmare to get everything organized as firefighters couldn’t drive up there with their cars and I tried to pitch in shuttling people up and down with the ATV.
As there are so many little side roads and paths they set up people at every corner and I told as many people as possible that the quarry road was open so no trucks had to go over our little bridge and through the curvy wood road.
As the fire trucks as small as they were couldn’t reach the fire, huge folding water basins were set up, filled by the trucks and then the fireman & women filled their backpacks, while others tried to lay out a hose to reach the nearby hotspots.
Of course, the trucks had to refill with water and I didn’t know where they were doing that until I heard someone say that one truck had just broken through the bridge we use, while trying to get to the refill station.
My heart skipped a beat and I looked at the other truck driver who was standing beside me…..why, how or when the information about the quarry being open and accessible for the trucks had gotten lost ….didn’t matter….what happened, happened, end of story.
I just asked the truck driver if I should take him down there on the ATV, he jumped on and off we went.
Thankfully the truck was able to get off the bridge, with no damage to it or it’s passengers….and that was the only thing that counted!!
I was able to cross with the ATV, but it was clear that we’d have to tear it down…but, that wasn’t important at that moment and when we found the truck I also saw that they had set up the pump truck at a really badly accessible spot and suggested to pack up and come to our place. It would be so much easier to access, there was room for trucks and we were only minutes away from the fire.
So, everything was packed up and I led the way to our place.
If you can say so in a situation like that…..when the firefighters saw the new location…..they were some “happy campers” 😉
In the meantime, it had gotten late and due to safety regulations, firefighters are not allowed to keep on working at night.
The team leader came down and told us that the fire was contained so far, but there still were a couple of hot spots that shouldn’t cause too much concern as the wind had died down.
So around 9 pm they packed up and told us they’d be back by the crack of dawn and wished us a good night.
Well, I have to admit that I didn’t feel too good knowing that there still might be a chance of the fire starting again. I do always have my emergency bag sitting right by the door as you always have to be aware of something maybe going sideways if you live like we do…..btw, I didn’t even notice that my bag said “Hotpack” before someone mentioned it to me 🙂
Frank on the other side was his usual “what the heck should go wrong”, but when it was around 10 pm and I decided to take the ATV for another drive up just to see if the fire had reignited (no I didn’t want to extinguish it, I would have just jumped in the truck and got the hell out of Dodge 😉 ) he said he’d join me.
So I just packed a couple of essentials (if you live in the woods long enough you don’t go without), jumped on the 4wheeler and drove off into the dark. We didn’t even have to drive far when we saw headlights on the old logging road. As we approached we saw that it was a couple of trucks with some of the firefighters inside. One rolled down the window and said “Man it’s good to see you guys, we don’t have a clue how to get out of here”.
I want one thing to be totally clear….I’m not telling this to embarrass anyone….it’s the opposite….
These people could be at home, with their families, have a nice and safe evening, relax and have fun….instead they spend their time crawling through burning forests, dragging, I don’t even want to think about how many pounds of weight, sweating and stumbling through the roughest terrain you can imagine, with equipment that is certainly not up to the standard of professional firefighters and certainly not for night orientation in the middle of nowhere, with no cell service or anything else !! If you’ve never been in the middle of the woods at night in the dark….well, don’t try it, because if you don’t know what to do, you’ll even get lost in broad daylight!!
And still…..they do this for their community, people they don’t even know and if they weren’t the people they are, probably wouldn’t even give a sh….about!
Having this said…. We just wanted to thank these brave women and men and say Kudos for your service!
Anyhow, next morning everybody was there and as the wind had picked up a couple of fires had started again. But nothing they couldn’t deal with and that then finally was taken care of by the afternoon.
I talked to the team leader and she told me that probably lightning had struck somewhere during that thunder event five days ago and that it’s quite common that fires will smoulder for days before they break out.
By Saturday evening everybody was gone and on Sunday Frank and I drove down to start tearing off the bridge
In the meantime the neighbor on whos property the main fire had been burning ordered new wood and on Wednesday him, his son and Frank put in a new bridge. Only a couple of little touchups will have to be done, but otherwise….we’re ready to rumble again 😉

I’m happy things went well and since then our animal neighbours one more showed us how therapeutical they are for the human soul ;-)….
Always great to watch a loon “take-off”
Well, I don’t know what this porcupine was doing up there on the tiny branches, but his face looking down at me on the last photo (although the quality isn’t great) is just priceless 😉
With the water levels being so low I had to get out of the canoe the other day to finally get a sneak peek to the inside of beaver dam…..doesn’t look too exciting, but be happy we don’t have scented photos….man, the stench coming out of there was really hard on the stomach. If they should ever move back we should get them a cleaning lady 😉
Look who comes every day to feed up on the septic field….their show is better than anything on TV 😉
Of course, there are always some impressions from mother nature I like to share and….it’s been 7 months now since Emmy went over the rainbow bridge and we still miss her like crazy. As she’s been part of me blogging since day one, a blog would be complete with at least one photo of her
Oh, and before I forget….I was making firewood the other day and came upon this slab of wood….is it only me, or do you see an ape face too ???
Coming to the End
Of course, some people already got back to us sharing their empathies and worries how terrible it would have been to lose this place to a fire and how dangerous life out here is.
We absolutely agree to the ladder as life in the woods holds some other risks than life in the city, but we’re aware of that and willing to take the risk.
But when it comes to “maybe losing everything”….even if you might not believe it…but it’s only a house! I don’t know how to really explain this, but if it would happen, well, so be it and we’d just switch to “plan B”
Because no matter what happens in life (and I mean life in general, not just ours)…it’s up to each and every one of us to make the best of it! Even if it’s not easy….we have the choice! A choice that only we can make. We are the only ones responsible for our life and what we make of it!
And if there’s one thing we’ve learned during all of our ups and downs, challenges and adventures, sad and happy times….health is the most important thing and we only tend to realize this when we lose it and….you really only need very, very little in life to be happy. But many of us have lost the ability to see this and as Tim McGraw says in one of his songs “Live like you were dying”.

06. Sept. 2020 -” Passiert” Euer Leben, oder “Lebt” Ihr es ?
Hallo Zusammen,
Ich hoffe, dass es Euch Allen gut geht und Ihr gesund seid?
Ich weiss, dass es eine Weile her ist seit dem letzten Blog und eigentlich war ja geplant, dass schon letzte Woche einer rauskommt, aber, dann kam etwas dazwischen das man “Leben” nennt 😉
Leben im Wald
Ein paar von Euch haben vlt. schon etwas davon auf unserer Facebook Seite mitbekommen, aber, hier nochmals in aller Ausfuehrlichkeit….und wer mich kennt, weiss, dass jetzt ein kleiner Roman folgt 😉 ..
Am Donnerstag (27.08.) schickte mir eine “Nachbarin” (lebt an einem anderen See, etwas weiter entfernt) eine SMS (sonst funktioniert hier nie SMS!!!) und meinte, ob alles in Ordnung waere. sie waere unten an ihrem See, es kommt Qualm aus unserer Richtung aus dem Wald und wuerde auch schon ganz verbrannt riechen.
Ich war mitten in einem Onlinekurs und dachte schon wieder “man, was will die nur” denn sie ist die absolute Oekotante hier in der Gegend und ziemlich verschrieen, aber, ich komme ganz gut mit ihr klar.
Naja, ich also raus vor die Tuer und wir hatten ziemlich starken Wind vom See Richtung Land. Habe nichts gesehen oder gerochen, bin also wieder rein, hab ihr nur geschrieben, dass ich davon nichts wuesste und hab mich wieder meinem Kurs zugewand.
Im Hinterkopf sprach aber noch immer meine kleine Stimme zu mir, denn zwei Tage zuvor hatten wir Nachts ein riesen Spektakel mit Blitz und Donner.
Also, dachte ich mir, springe ich mal auf’s ATV und fahre mal eben die Waldwege in der Gegend ab, nur so zur Sicherheit.
Naja, ich musste gar nicht lange fahren, da hab ich schon die Flammen gesehen, durch den Wind ist aber alles von uns weggedrueckt worden und daher hab ich nichts gesehen und gerochen.
Hab dann gleich die Feuerwehr gerufen und versuchte denen zu erklaeren, wo es ist und das ich die unten am Briefkasten mit der Hausnummer treffen wuerde.
Die Tante am Apparat hat das ueberhaupt nicht gepeilt und zum Glueck kam ca. zur gleichen Zeit eine Meldung von einem Ueberwachungsflugzeug (da wir hier ja monatelang keinen Regen hatten, waren einige Feuer in der Gegend ausgebrochen) und die freiwillige Feuerwehr wurde informiert.
Ich bin sicherheitshalber trotzdem mit dem ATV runter, hab Frank noch auf der Arbeit angerufen und gesagt er soll sofort kommen, denn ueber unsere kleine Bruecke passt ja kein Loeschfahrzeug und der Alternativweg ueber die Kiesgrube wurde von uns ja mit Felsbrocken abgesperrt (auf wunsch der Gesellschaft, der das Gelaende gehoert) damit die ATV Fahrer dort nicht Unfug treiben.
Naja, ich also runter und das Tor aufgemacht, da kamen schon die ersten Fahrzeuge von unserer kleinen freiwilligen Feuerwehrstation um die Ecke gefahren und jemand vom Forstamt gleich hinterher. Da niemand wusste, wo sie mitten im Wald hinsollten, bin ich also vorgefahren und da die Kiesgrube ja noch immer abgesperrt war, mussten wir erstmal alle bei uns ueber die Bruecke.
Ich die also alle die ca. 4 km durch den Wald gefahren (da war es dann ca. 17 Uhr) und der vom Forstamt drueckte mir dann eine Rolle mit Neonband in die Hand und meinte, ob ich den Weg kennzeichnen koennte, damit die Leute ueberhaupt bis dahin finden wuerden.
Naja, ich bin dann also los wieder runter und hab alles abgesteckt, aber auch unten, wo ein Posten stand bescheid gesagt, dass Loeschfahrzeuge nur geradeaus ueber die Kiesgrube fahren sollten und die gleich offen waere.
Die Loeschfahrzeuge der freiwilligen Feuerwehr sind alle ziemlich klein, aber, wenn die voll sind wiegen die natuerlich auch einiges.
Da der Weg hoch bis zur Brandstelle nur ein voellig ueberwachsener, einspuriger, holpriger Forstweg ist, mussten nachkommende Feuerwehrleute bei uns an der Gabelung parken und ich habe die mit dem ATV alle hochgeschuttelt.
Und da man mit den Loeschfahrzeugen (inzwischen waren es drei an der Zahl) nicht bis as Feuer kam, wurde ein Auffangbecken aufgebaut und befuellt, wo die Feuerwehrleute dann mit ihrem Wasserrucksack ran sind und diese befuellt haben, um dann ca. 1 km bis zur Brandstelle durch den voellig zugewachsenen Wald zu brechen.
Ich hatte gerade einen neuen Feuerwehrmann abgesetzt, da kam die Durchsage, dass ein Loeschfahrzeug an unserer kleinen Bruecke eingebrochen und diese nicht mehr befahrbar waere !!! Da hatte ich zwar Allen mitgeteilt, dass sie ueber die Kiesgrube ohne Problem fahren koennten, weil das schoen breit und frei waere …..aber, irgendwo war die Infokette unterbrochen und die Loeschfahrzeugfahrer wussten davon nix.
Frank hatte es naemlich in der Rekordzeit von 19 min (sonst faehrt man ca. 40) von der Arbeit nach Hause geschafft und alles freigeraeumt.
Naja, ich habe also einen Einsatzleiter auf’s ATV genommen und wir sind dann erstmal zur Bruecke gefahren, wo einer der Loeschfahrzeuge zwar an einem Teil eingebrochen war, aber, es noch ruebergeschafft hatte. Ich konnte auch noch mit dem ATV rueber, aber, die Bruecke war abrissreif.
Das Pumpfahrzeug stand an einem Hang und versuchte gerade wieder irgendwie hochzukommen und ich hatte keine Ahnung, dass die eh versucht hatten, die ganze Zeit das Wasser von dieser voellig unzugaenglichen Stelle zu holen und schlug dem Einsatzleiter vor, dass sie zu uns kommen sollten, denn das waere ja gleich um die Ecke vom Brandherd und die Zufahrt waere problemlos fuer die Fahrzeuge moeglich.
Naja, also haben wir das ganze Equipment zusammen gepackt ich habe alle Fahrzeuge zu uns hochgeleitet und auch wenn die Leute ja alle aus der Gegend stammen, es wusste niemand wirklich, dass dort ein See waere, geschweige denn jemand wohnen wuerde. Das klappte ab da jedenfalls gut und das Feuer konnte eingedaemmt werden.
Dann brach aber die Nacht ein und da unsere freiwillige Feuerwehr nicht fuer Nachteinsaetze ausgestattet ist, duerfen die hier nicht nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit weiterarbeiten!!!
Also, packten die dann gegen 21 Uhr zusammen und meinten nur, dass es noch ein paar kleine Feuerherde gaebe, aber, es nicht so schlimm aussehen wuerde und sie am naechsten morgen um 7 Uhr wieder da waeren.
Naja, ein gutes Gefuehl hatte ich nicht wirklich und so hab ich dann gegen 22.30 Uhr zu Frank gesagt, dass ich nochmal mit dem ATV hochfahren wuerde um zu gucken, wie der Stand der Dinge waere.
Unsere Tasche mit Papieren und ein paar Notwendigkeiten steht ja eh immer an der Tuer bereit fuer den Fall das wir mal einen schnellen Abgang machen muessen. Ist uebrigens reiner Zufall, dass auf meiner Tasche “Hotpack” draufsteht….hab ich erst gesehen, als mich jemand darauf ansprach 🙂
Frank meinte zwar, wir koennten eh nix machen, selbst wenn’s brennt, aber, der Wind hatte etwas gedreht und ich wollte mir etwas Gewissheit verschaffen, dass es bei den paar kleinen Herden geblieben war.
Er kam dann aber doch mit, ich habe mir noch ein paar Dinge, wie Taschenlampe und Messer eingepackt und dann sprangen wir auf’s ATV und sind losgefahren. Wir waren noch keine 500 Meter Richtung Hauptbrandstelle gekommen, da sahen wir ploetzlich lauter Autoscheinwerfer und beim Naeherkommen, ging vom ersten Fahrzeug die Scheibe runter und wir sahen dass das lauter Leute der freiwilligen Feuerwehr waren, die in ihren Autos sassen.
Die Fahrerin des ersten Fahrzeugs guckte uns total erleichtet an und meinte “Ein Glueck seid Ihr da! Wir sitzen hier schon die ganze Zeit und wissen nicht mehr, wo wir lang muessen und wie wir hier rauskommen”
Frank und ich konnten es erst gar nicht glauben, aber, die kennen sich in dieser Gegend nicht aus, sind fuer Nachteinsaetze nicht ausgeruestet und wer noch nie mitten in der Nacht in einem stockfinsteren Wald gestanden hat, kann sich nicht vorstellen, wie schnell man sich verirren kann, selbst am hellichten Tag!!
Naja, wir haben den Trupp dann durch den Wald bis runter an die Hauptstrasse geleitet und von dort wussten die Gestrandeten dann jedenfalls wieder wie sie nach Hause kommen.
Am naechsten Morgen waren alle wieder da und da der Wind wieder aufgefrischt hatte, waren ein paar neue Feuer ausgebrochen, die dann aber bis zum Nachmittag alle geloescht wurden.
Die Einsatzleiterin sagte mir dann noch, dass es in der Regel zwei – drei Tage dauert, bis ein Feuer sich nach einem Blitzeinschlag ausbreitet und das war dann genau der Zeitraum von dem Tag an, wo wir den Abend das Blitz und Donner Spektakel hatten.
Naja, am Samstag haben wir dann angefangen endgueltig aufzuraeumen und ueber Nacht hatten wir zum Glueck zu Auslaeufer eines Tropensturms von dem Hurrikan der ja unten in den USA gewuetet hatte und der uns ca. 60 mm Regen brachte, womit sich alle Braende in der Gegend hier erledigt haben duerften.
Frank und ich sind dann Sonntag zur Bruecke runter und haben angefangen sie abzureissen
Der Nachbar auf dessen Grundstueck es hauptsaechlich gebrannt hatte, hat sich dann um die Bestellung fuer neues Holz fuer die Bruecke gekuemmert und am Mittwoch haben wir uns dann getroffen und ratzfatz eine neue Bruecke hingebaut. Es fehlen zwar noch ein paar Kleinigkeiten, aber, wir koennen wieder ungehindert zu unserem Grundstueck kommen.
Also, Ende gut, Alles gut 🙂
Tierwelt
Ich bin wirklich froh, dass das gut ausgegangen ist und unsere tierischen Nachbarn haben uns dann auch wieder gezeigt, wie gut Natur fuer die Seele ist…
Es ist immer wieder toll anzusehen, wenn der Eistaucher “losrennt” um Anlauf fuer seinen Abflug zu finden.
Was er da oben wollte, werden wir wohl nie herausfinden, aber, dieses ziemlich grosse Stachelschwein sass oben in einem Baumwipfel und ich koennte mich wegschmeissen ueber das Gesicht von ihm im letzten Foto….okay die Qualitaet ist nicht die Beste, aber man muss einfach lachen, oder ?
Der Wasserstand ist noch immer sehr niedrig und unsere Bieber haben ihre Bauten verlassen und sind fuer dieses Jahr woanders hingezogen . Bei einer Spritztour mit dem Kanu ueber den See haben wir dann gesehen, dass der Eingang von diesem Bau komplett freilag und ich bin erstmal aus dem Kanu und habe mal die Kamera in den Bau gehalten um Fotos zu machen. Einmalige Situation, denn normalerwiese liegen diese Eingaenge unterhalb der Wasseroberflaeche! Und eines kann ich Euch sagen…..Puh, stinkt das in so einem Bau…..vlt. war ja aber auch die Wasserspuelung zum Bieberklo kaputt 😉
Und dann natuerlich unsere taeglichen Besucher auf unserer kleinen Wildwiese…die zu beobachten, wie sie wachsen und herumspringen ist einfach nur besser als jedes Fernsehprogram 🙂
Hier dann noch ein paar Impressionen, was die Natur sonst so fuer uns auf Lager hatte und es sind jetzt genau 7 Monate vergangen, seitdem unser Emmchen ueber die Regenbogenbruecke gegangen ist. Sie fehlt uns jeden Tag wie verrueckt und der Blog waere nicht komplett, wenn es nicht wenigstens ein Foto von ihr gaebe
Ich war den einen Tag am Feuerholz machen, da fiel mir diese Holzscheibe auf…..hab ich einfach nur zu viel Phantasie, oder seht Ihr auch ein Affengesicht ?!
Wir kommen zum Ende
Wir hatten natuerlich bereits ein paar Kommentare wegen des Feuers und wie furchtbar es gewesen waere, wenn wir alles verloren haetten und wie gefaehrlich das Leben hier draussen doch waere.
Und was Letzteres angeht, da stimmen wir vollkommen zu….das Leben hier draussen birgt selbstverstaendlich ein anderes Risiko als in der Stadt, aber, wir waren und sind uns dessen voellig bewusst und so gut wie moeglich darauf vorbereitet.
Was die Sache angeht “alles zu verlieren”….auch wenn es mancher nicht glauben mag…..es ist nur ein Haus! Ich weiss gar nicht, wie ich es ausdruecken soll, aber, wenn es passieren wuerde, dann ist es halt so und wir wuerden einfach zu “Plan B” uebergehen.
Egal was im Leben passiert (und damit meine ich nicht nur unser Leben)…..es liegt nur an uns, aus dem, was das Leben uns bietet, etwas zu machen. Auch, wenn es manchmal nicht einfach ist….wir haben die Wahl!! Oft eine Schwierige, aber, eine, die nur WIR treffen. Nur wir sind fuer unser Leben und das was wir daraus machen verantwortlich . Und wenn wir Eines gelernt haben….dann ist es, das Gesundheit ein Segen ist (den wir alle oft erst sehen, wenn’s zu spaet ist) und man wirklich wenig im Leben braucht um Gluecklich zu sein! Wir haben nur oft verlernt das zu Sehen… und zu Leben! Habt Ihr schon einmal das Lied von Country Saenger Tim McGraw gehoert “Live like you were dying”…das trifft es gut!!
