Hier geht’s zur deutschen Version

Well it’s been a couple of days since the last post and I’m glad to tell you that we’ve got three sill logs down and the forth is on top and ready to be taken down again for rough notching ! And it’s a great feeling !!

There have been some questions why we set the logs, then take them down, set them again and then take them down a second time before finally being finished.

Here’s a brief description of what has to be done as soon as two opposite sill logs are set with the two other sill logs and all other logs following:

A specific (diameters have to match so that it’ll really fit in the end) log is taken by crane from the log pile

Then sand it down, take the crane and set on top of the logs where it will be in future.

Then Frank take measurements where the log ends will overlap and pencils a rough sketch on the log where the rough notch will be.

Then we take off the log again with the crane and bring it to the workstation where Frank cuts out the rough notches.

Then we bring it back with the crane where is was and set it on top of the logs and now with the rough notches it sits deep enough on the other logs that Frank can do the scribing along the inner and outer side of the log. That takes a while as the scriber has two air bubbles that always have to be in sync.

Then we take off the log again with the crane and bring it back to the workstation where Franks now cuts out everything lined by the scriber very precisely, same with the notches and also sets up new saddle notches for the next log that comes on top.

The cut out notch over the complete length of the log including the notches is then lined on both sides with a special gasket to make sure that there will be no chance for draft or water creeping through small cracks or spaces in case there should be some.

Then the log is taken back to the place it belongs…………..and hopefully fits like a glove……….if not……off it goes again back to the workstation .

So usually you can say from the round log until it sits properly in it’s place takes about 16 – 18 hours per log.

And of course there are always a couple of hick ups on the way…….either from the technical side :

Our crane for example……the boom goes up and down…..but extending it and driving it back….not possible….everything is rotten tight. So it’s fixed in one position and to get to the side closest to the crane…….we have to drive the crane back .

To get to the opposite side……we have to alternately go up or down with the boom and extend or wind up the cable to create different angles to be able to reach the side furthest away.

You see……not that easy if you have to deal with old machines and takes longer……but it is what it is and we’re really happy we have the crane.

Oh and if I want to lift the boom (I’m the crane operator) I have to lean forward press the handle with one hand, hold the lever with the other (otherwise it would bend) therefore have my head on my knee and with the foot I have to slightly hold the gas pedal only in one position as otherwise it’ll die…….and besides that watch the boom and Frank who only gives me hand signals……..so it’s a good stretching exercise too 😉

Or then, there is what happens each now and then………..you just make a mistake:

First sill log………..we started lowering is on the rebars and it fit like a charm…………we almost wanted to celebrate……..but then…….the last hole Frank hat drilled……….was almost 3 inches off !!!

He had simply gotten some measurements wrong running up and down from the building site to the workstation ……so we had to take the log down again and drill a new hole for the rebar stick.

Frank was frustrated but hey……..that happens and it’s no big deal…….and with wood it’s really easy to correct something like that.

And in the end……

…what a great feeling …… the first log of our new home !!!

Then you start to sweat when the log is really thick at the end but not so much in the middle and that’s what you have as your second sill log and have to transport it down to the building site……but it’s so thin in the middle that when you’d lift it…..it would break….so you have to attach a support.

Still you can see how the end hangs down and the straps are close to bursting……..

I really wanted to shoot the video until the end……but holding the rope and steering the log with one hand and filming with the other, stumbling backwards over all the gravel….just got too dangerous….but you’ll get the idea:

Some people want to know why we don’t cut the logs right at the building site………….well……Frank refuses to mess it up with all the shavings and sawdust ……even though we could shovel it away…but no discussions about that possible! So that’s why we crane everything up and down ……….but we do have a very clean building site 😉

Not only that but Mr. 100 % Frank   what did he do after putting down the pressure treated boards where the logs came on top  and he had attached some sill gasket to them to really make sure there’ll be no draft later on from there…….well, the evening before we put on the log it had rained…….so it was wet between the gasket and the “pressure treated” board…..well…..look what he did so that it would dry before we put on the log !!!

I think sometimes he really does all that to drive me nuts !!!

06. Mai 2017  – Staemme, Transport & Berechnungen

Nun ist es schon es paar Tage her seit dem letzten post und ich freue mich, Euch mitteilen zu koennen, dass drei der vier Auflagestaemme nun liegen und der Vierte soweit fertig ist, dass er nur noch endbearbeitet werden muss ! Was fuer ein tolles Gefuehl !!

Es wurden uns ein paar Fragen gestellt, warum wir denn die Staemme erst setzen, dann wieder runternehmen usw, bevor sie dann endgueltig liegenbleiben.

Hier also mal eine Kurzbeschreibung, was generell mit allen Staemmen gemacht werden muss, sobald die ersten beiden Auflagestaemme fest gegenueber von einander liegen:

Ein bestimmter Stamm, der genau von den Abmessungen her passen muss, wird mit dem Kran vom Lagerplatz genommen, dann geschliffen und mit dem Kran weiter zu der Stelle gebracht, wo er spaeter auch fest liegen soll.

Dann nimmt Frank Mass, wo die Staemme ueberlappen werden und zeichnet auf dem Stamm grob an, wo die “Notches” hinkommen.

Dann wird der Stamm wieder mit dem Kran aufgenommen und zurueck zur Bearbeitungsstelle gebracht, wo Frank dann die “rough notches” (groben Einkerbungen) mit der Kettensaege ausschneidet.

Mit dem Kran geht’s dann wieder zurueck an die vorhergesehene Stelle und nun sitzt der Stamm dank der groben Einkerbung tief genug, dass Frank dann mit der Feinanzeichnung (scribing) an der Innen und Aussenseite vom Stamm anfangen kann. Hierbei wird die Oberflaeche vom unteren an den oberen Stamm angezeichnet, damit, wenn alles ausgeschnitten ist, der obere und der untere Stamm, wie angegossen aufeinander sitzen. Ist nicht so einfach, den der “Scriber” ist mit zwei Luftblasen (wie bei einer Wasserwaage) ausgestattet, die immer mittig sein muessen !

Dann geht’s wieder per Kran zurueck and den Arbeitsplatz wo Frank dann ganz genau an den Linien entlang schneidet  und mit dem Stechbeitel arbeitet  und die Mitte so weit aushoehlt, dass die Staemme aufeinander passen. Es wird auch gleich fuer den naechsten Stamm ueber dem “notch” ein “saddle notch” geschnitten, wo dann der naechste Stamm rauf kommt.

Auf der gesammten Laenge wird dann noch innerhalb der Kuhle ein spezielles Dichtband befestigt, damit, auch wenn das Holz im Laufe der Jahre arbeitet, es nirgends durchzieht oder sich Wasser durchdruecken kann.

Dann kommt der Stamm mit dem Kran wieder an den Platz, wo er hingehoert …..und hoffentlich passt er dann wie angegossen……falls nicht…..wieder ran an den Kran und ab zur Arbeitsstation zum nachbearbeiten 😦

Generell kann man sagen, dass vom geschaelten, bis zum fertig bearbeiteten Stamm ca. 16 – 18 Std Arbeitszeit benoetigt werden.

Und natuerlich laeuft nicht immer alles glatt……..entweder von der technischen Seite:

Bei unserem Kran z B, geht der Kranarm zwar hoch und runter……aber man kann ihn nicht aus- und einfahren, weil alles festgerottet ist.

Das bedeutet fuer uns, wenn ein Stamm direkt vor dem Kran aufgelegt werden soll, muessen wir mit dem Kran zuruecksetzen…..und um zur am weitesten, entfernten Stelle gegenueber ranzukommen….tja, da muessen wir uns damit behelfen, den Kranarm hoch und runterzufahren und entsprechend immer das Kabel ein- und auszufahren, um so weit wie moeglich herauszukommen………zum Glueck hat Frank in Mathe und Physik aufgepasst 😉

Ist also alles nicht so einfach, aber, wenn man mit so altem Material arbeitet, muss man halt das Beste draus machen und es dauert zwar alles etwas laenger, aber es geht auch so und der alte Kran macht sein Ding prima !

Ach ja, und wenn ich den Kranarm anheben moechte (ja ich bin Kranfuehrer 😉

…..bedenke, es ist super eng in der Kabine…..muss ich mich mit dem Oberkoerper auf die Knie lehnen, mit der einen Hand den Kranarmhebel vorwaertsdruecken, mit der anderen Hand unter der Konsole den Metalstab der Umlenkung festhalten, weil er sonst verbiegt und dabei mit dem Fuss gaaaanz leicht in nur einer Position etwas Gas geben, weil sonst der Motor ausgeht………….das dabei noch der Kranarm beobachtet werden muss und Frank, der mir nur mit Handsignalen mitteilt was er will ………ist dann das Sahnehaeubchen samt Kirsche …..aber, so bekomme ich noch nebenbei zu meinen Dehnuebungen …….ist doch auch was wert 🙂

Dann kommt es natuerlich auch vor, dass man einfach einen Fehler macht:

Als wir den ersten Stamm auflegen wollten, die ja auf die Bewehrungsstaebe passen mussten, flutschte der in die ersten Loecher nur so rein und wir waren schon fast am feiern, als beim letzten Loch Ende war……das Loch hatte fast 8 cm Versatz ?!?!?

Frank hatte einfach beim Messen und staendigem Hoch -und Runterrennen um alles anzuzeichnen, beim letzten Loch von der falschen Seite gemessen……naja, musste der Stamm halt wieder hoch und ein neues Loch gebohrt werden……..wenn man mit Holz arbeitet zum Glueck alles kein Problem!

Dann gibt es noch die Momente, wenn ein Auflagestamm an einem Ende noch richtig dick ist und ein Teil in der Mitte so duenn, dass es durchbrechen wuerde, wenn man ihn fuer den Transport anhebt…..dann muss man einen Stuetzbalken befestigen.

Hier haette ich gern weiter aufgenommen, aber mit der einen Hand das Seil halten und den Stamm fuehren, mit der anderen filmen und dann dabei noch rueckwaerts ueber’s Geroell zu stolpern, das war dann selbst mir zu gefaehrlich (da muss glaube ich noch ‘ne Helmkamera her 🙂

Trotzdem man gut sehen, dass der Gurt am Ende kurz vorm reissen ist und der Stamm runterhaengt.

Und dann hat Frank (auch Mr. 100% genannt)  noch so seine eigenen Ideen, womit er sich extra Arbeit macht……

Auf die impraegnierten Bretter, wo die Staemme raufkommen, hatte er noch ein Dichtband gelegt.

Nun hatte es am Abend bevor wir die Staemme setzen wollten geregnet, also war es feucht zwischen dem Dichtband und dem impraegnierten !!! Brett……naja, das musste erst trocknen…..und wie……seht selbst

Manchmal macht er mich wirklich fertig !!
