Hier geht’s zur deutschen Version
After having lived in Nova Scotia from 2010- 2015 and then moved to north Sweden (400 km below the artic circle) we’re back where we belong……….Nova Scotia !!
And this is where our blog starts
It’s been a week now since we arrived.
We left Sweden on August 17th and I was bitter sweet to see our beautiful farm slowly disappear in the rear view mirror……….the countless hours we had spent on working on this amazing over 100 year old farm was quite something but we never regretted it and the new owners love it !
It was an awesome time and a beautiful place…………but somehow wasn’t right for us…..so we decided to move on………no regrets, no doubts……….just packing up and moving on.
A lot of people ask how can we just do that……….I don’t know, it’s the way we are and as it’s our third intercontinental move………somehow all the hassle (I mean packing and organizing ) in between, is just part of it.
The drive down to Frankfurt/Germany took us three days and halfway down we dropped off our RAM at the harbor in Bremerhaven/Germany where it was loaded on a RoRo (roll on/roll off) for shipment to Halifax. We would have sold it but for the money we would’ve gotten we couldn’t have afforded a new one here, even considering the shipping costs……so the RAM too went back, where it came from as we had taken it from here to Sweden with us.
From Bremerhaven we took a rental car which we just had to drop off at the airport.
Why did we go through the hassle of driving almost 2000 km when we could have easily taken a plane from Sweden to Canada………well it’s at least three stopovers and we wanted our dog to have as little stress as possible and from Frankfurt there are direct flights to Halifax…….at least that was the plan.
She’s a great traveler and really easy going……..every night a different hotel, switching cars and locations…..she’s fine as long as she’s with her “pack”………and we really do everything to keep her comfortable and protected.
On Aug 20th our flight left and when we arrived at the airport with our four suitcases (containing everything we would need for the next few month, from clothes, bedding, dishes and cutlery for two….you don’t want to buy everything, when you know you have a container with everything on it’s way !) , hand baggage and the huge dog crate with all the essentials for her to have the least stress while flying and wanted to check in…………..they told us that the original plane had some kind of damage and we’d have to switch to a smaller one that for that reason had to stop in Ireland for refueling………..so much for avoiding a stopover for the dog.
Frank was furious and they offered we could take the next plane three days later………..but who know’s if there’s not a problem with that too ?!
So, we had to swallow our anger and hope for the best.
My heart always breaks when I see her in the crate when she’s taken to the departure area and it’s totally out of my control what happens from there on.
And I want to say……I’d never take my dog on a plane only for a short vacation !!! But with this moved there was no other possibility but getting her on a plane.
We really just had a 45 min stopover in Ireland for refueling and didn’t even have to leave the plane….not sure if that’s actually really allowed for safety reasons ?!?!
Everything went fine from there and after arrival I took care of the dog getting through customs and Frank was left with all the paperwork for us and the container that would arrive about five weeks later with everything we owned.
After about one hour all was done, we picked up the rental car and drove down to a motel we had booked before and arrived there at 1 am.
It was a short night as we had an appointment with the seller of our property at 9 am in the morning who wanted to show it to us both.
We had found it online when we were in Sweden and Frank had flown to Nova Scotia for three days in Oct. 2015 alone to have a look at it, called me from there, said he thought it was nice…..although he’d just seen it from a canoe and we bought it………..50 acres of woodland in the middle of nowhere….perfect !!
So we grabbed some breakfast at Tim Hortens…….(.so nice to be home 😉 ) and off we went…..to the place that would be our new “home” !
From the main gravel road there is a small, narrow path in really bad condition (we’re promised it would be done soon) that leads almost 2 km though the woods and over a little river (that does have a nice little bridge) and then there’s a foot path into the woods…………which after about ½ km end at the lake…..a small lake but with nobody else on it !!!
We own about 1.6 km of the waterfront and the rest belongs to a guy who’s never even been down there as he has 400 something acres and lives on the other end of his huge property on another lake……so it’s just us and mother nature !
We walked (or rather stumbled) through the dense forest and tried to get a feeling where we were and where our property starts and ends to get an idea where we’d actually want to have a house.
And that’s where it got difficult………..we have rocks everywhere and if we didn’t intend to do a lot of blasting there were not to many places where we could build.
But we were so overwhelmed (and maybe a little bit jetlagged too) that we just didn’t get a vibe.
We also had to consider a lot as we’d have to rely on solar energy ……so where set up that to gain the most of the sun and so on and so on…..
After a couple of hours we left ………..with a lot to think about………….and no plan at all !
The other thing was…………..we need a “home” as we couldn’t afford to stay at the motel for more than four days………….we are on a tight budget !
And……….the rental car was only ours for four more days too……….so we had to get a car.
We’d done a lot of research in advance and I had my list…
I love having lists……..always makes me feel good and efficient if I can mark something as done………and being over 50 I have to admit my brain needs some written support each now and then to remember things 😉 …
so the next two days we where off and looking for trailers, 5th wheelers and Jeep Patriots (we had that one before and it’s perfect for what we need a car for)
But in the evening of that first day we had some friends come over to the motel to welcome us back and while sitting there chatting and eating Pizza………one of them said “ how does it feel to be homeless?”
Frank and I looked at each other, the dog lying between us and peacefully sleeping………..and where really baffled at that thought…………as it had never occurred to us that we were actually “homeless” from that point of view.
We still don’t see it that way………….we might not have, what people tend to call a “house”, we’ll probably wear the same clothes we brought with us for the next months as everything in the container will be storage in another container after arrival…….simply because we don’t have a house or anything where we could put it………but that’s ok !!!
We used to think very, very differently and be all about being prepared, safe and planned out to the max……but if it’s one thing life taught us…………you need less than you thing ….and can never be prepared for everything………stay open minded and think out of the box………works best for us J
So long story short…….we got the nice nine year old 5th wheeler I had an eye on for a while already in Sweden and the second hand Jeep was ours too within the next couple of days
The 5th wheeler was supposed to be delivered three days later.
I was supposed to meet the driver at a gas station on the highway and lead the way to us which would be an about 30 min drive.
He was there in time and I drove ahead while he followed me first on the nice paved road, which then turns into a dirt road for 8 km only then to arrive at a gate from where we have to drive through to get to our property.
Of course you can’t take that narrow winding path with a pickup truck and a 34’ 5th wheeler behind…..so you have to take a logging road that goes through a gravel pit and take a steep incline up and then eventually get to our property…….where he’d somehow have to turn and leave the trailer by the road as we still didn’t have a driveway into our property.
I had been watching his face in the rearview mirror when the road turn from asphalt to gravel and when I turned in at the gate I really didn’t want to tell him what laid ahead of him in detail…….so I just said it’s a gravel road that goes uphill.
When we reached the quarry I saw him stop while I drove uphill with trees on one side and the steep slope of the quarry to the other side of the road……
But then he hit the pedal and rumbled up the hill and soon we reached the spot where he had to circle around and somehow maneuver the big trailer backwards into the woods.
After all was set’n done he got out and while I immediately started to apologize for all the inconvenience he just started to laugh and said he had a hoot………..turns out he was a former army vet and had served in Afghanistan as a truck driver and driving that thing up there was a peace of cake………..see and that’s why you should never worry about things, in advantage……….waste of time and I’m sure caused me some extra grey hair ;-}
So now we have our home standing there…….and we got ourselves a nice 6500 W Yamaha generator from Shore Cycle …..Frank used to work there part time and Justin (the boss) has offered we could come back anytime…….and also offered us to put all our stuff from the container into a spare container he has until we have a place where we can put it…….for free!!!! We can’t say how grateful we are to him !!
So we do have some power………..but still, being off the lake for ½ km ……..we don’t have any direct access to water………so no tap water or showers or using the washing machine (yeah that thing has a washer/dryer combo………..but what’s that good for without water 😉 ).
And doing all the other business “when nature calls”………..well………….we got ourselves a gardening shovel and the woods will do just fine for the time being 😉
We do though take a “shower” ….every evening in the lake as the weather is awesome …..and with nobody around………who cares 🙂
We had an architect come out and walk over the property to see where the best and cheapest place would be to set up a septic system and would still be good for setting up a ground mount solar system.
As said……..we have so much land but really limited possibilities to “spread out” due to all the granite boulders without blasting.
Today we did have somebody out with some heavy equipment taking down trees and putting in a driveway and clearing about 1 acre of land down at the lake.
In case you’d like to have a look how that’s done:
Next week he’ll be down with bulldozers and some other toys to remove the roots and hopefully be able to create a big enough flat area where we could build the house later.
We want to have all that done as soon as possible as we’d like to at least have the foundation for the house in before winter, so that we could start setting logs in spring …..of course we first have to find some place where we’re going to be able to get 50 ft. long red pines……..we’ll figure it out 😉
We also have to focus on winterizing the camper and the plan is to build kind of a car port around it and insulate it properly.
We also need a wood stove that we’ll install inside……..that should keep us warm.
But there’ll be a lot of things that’ll happen that we haven’t considered or thought about, so we’ll see how that all works out.
But otherwise everything’s fine and we feel great finally being able to start into our new adventure !

deutsche Version
Hallo Ihr Lieben,
ist nun eine Woche her, seitdem wir angekommen sind und in Ermangelung von Telefon oder Internet im Camper oder auf dem Grundstueck, hier nun eine kurze Rundmail an Euch alle, damit Ihr wisst, wie’s uns bisher ergangen ist und es uns gut geht !
Die Fahrt von Schweden bis Deutschland war problemlos und fast staufrei.
Die Abgabe vom truck in Bremerhaven lief auch problemlos und er sollte so in knapp zwei Wochen ankommen, ebenso der Container.
Beim Flug war’s dann aber vorbei mit’m Glueck………angeblich hatte der Flieger ‘nen technischen Defekt und man hatte bereits eine Ersatzmaschine parat, allerdings ist die 757 nicht fuer Ueberseefluege ausgestattet und so gab’s keine Businessclass und nonstop war dann auch Essig……..Zwischenlandung in Irland angesagt zum auftanken………..war natuerlich mega Sch….., denn wegen des Hundes kam’s uns auf’n nonstop Flug an.
Naja, meckern hilft ja nicht und bis zum naechsten Flug drei Tage spaeter warten, war auch keine Alternative, also in den sauren Apfel beissen und ab.
Ging aber alles soweit gut und die Dicke hat’s auch gut ueberstanden.
Super gut sogar, denn die Menschen hier haben ein total anderes Verhaeltnis zu Hunden und als man sie gesehen hat, wollte jeder sie gleich ansprechen, kraulen und knuddeln………sie war also gleich wieder voellig in ihrem Element.
Der Gang durch den Zoll war auch problemslos und unsere Listen alle abgestempelt und so sollte es bei der Freigabe wenn Auto und Container ankommen eigentlich keine Probleme mehr geben.
Sind dann um Mitternacht im Motel angekommen und haben uns am Sonntag Morgen gleich mal unser neues “Zuhause” angesehen………naja, man sieht den See vor lauter Baeumen kaum, aber dafuer hat Husqvarna ja die Kettensaege erfunden !
Scherz beiseite………..Grundstueck ist super und nun haben wir 20 ha Waldgrundstueck mit einer Wasserfront von ca 1,5 km…………..was will man mehr ?!
Sonntag Abend gab’s dann noch ‘ne kleine Willkomensparty von und mit diversen unserer Freunde, die sich alle super freuen, dass wir wieder hier sind und Hilfsangebote in allen Bereichen gibts reichlich.
Naja, aber mit’m Grundstueck allein ist’s erstmal nicht getan und so sind wir am Montag gleich losgefahren und haben uns Wohnwagen angesehen, die wir vorher schon im Internet vorgemerkt hatten.
Und da wir nicht ewig mit einem Mietwagen rumfahren konnten, haben wir auch gleich nach einem Jeep Patriot geschaut, den wir auch im Internet gesehen haben……….
nun ja………..am Montag Abend waren wir dann jedenfalls im einen 5thWheeler und einen Jeep “reicher”, die wir aber beide erst zum Ende der Woche abholen konnten.
Dienstag war dann mehr ein “Behoerdentag”, wo aber alles problemslos abging .
Mittwoch sind wir dann zum Haendler mit dem 5th Wheeler gefahren, denn wir haben noch keine Moeglichkeit das Ding selbst zu bewegen, weil uns die entsprechende Zugmaschine fehlt und hatten mit dem das Abkommen, wenn wir ihn selbst uebergabefertig machen, dass er ihn dann am Donnerstag anliefern koennte. Na, und da haben wir natuerlich zugesagt, denn das Motelleben konnte ja auch nicht ewig weitergehen.
Am Donnerstag kam dann der Fahrer mit dem Monster Wohnwagen an………….ich hab ihn an einer Tankstelle getroffen und bin vorgefahren und hab mir nur gedacht………nur nicht anhalten, denn wenn der Zeit hat zu ueberlegen, wo ich ihn langfuehre, dann streikt der……denn um zu unserem Grundstueck zu kommen muss man erstmal ueber eine 8 km lange Schotterstrasse fahren und dann kommt man an das Tor, wo es dann 2,5 km quer geht, unter anderem durch eine Kiesgrube und da geht’s dann steil bergauf……….naja, ist aber nix zu der Alternative, aber dazu komme ich noch, denn der Weg durch die Grube ist noch die gute Strecke.
Der Fahrer war aber cool drauf……..ehemaliger Militaer LKW Fahrer in Afganistan………..ausser ‘nem kurzen Zucken war da kein Problem !
Er hat den Camper am Wegrand abgestellt und dort stehen wir nun, bis ein Weg auf’s Grundstueck geschlagen wird, der Bauplatz entbaumt, entwurzelt und begradigt ist und wir das gute Stueck irgendwie raufziehen koennen.
Ach ja…..dazu haben wir uns dann doch noch einen uralten Pickup zugelegt, der das schafft und vorallem fuer die 2,5 km Strecke nicht zu schade ist………..denn unsere Zufahrt muss erst noch vom damaligem Verkaeufer fertiggestellt werden………..bis dahin ist sie fuer PKW’s unbefahrbar.
Fuer die 2,5 km brauchen wir ca. 9 min Fahrzeit !!!
Der Camper selbst ist super ! 9 Jahre alt, aber super Zustand……und mit allem was man sich wuenschen kann, zentraler Staubsauger, drei Slideout’s, Klima, Waschmaschine/Trockner, Mikro, Herd, Ofen, drei Fernseher !!! (einer in einer Aussenstauklappe, falls man mal draussen sitzen und fernsehen will!), Satellitenanlage……….etc, etc, etc…………nur……dazu muesste man auch alles benutzen koennen !!
Wir stehen ca ½ km vom See entfernt……also nix Frischwasser zum Duschen oder Waschmaschine nutzen…….klar ginge es, aber wer will schon die 20 l Eimer ½ km hin und her schleppen, bis die 400 l Frischwassertanks voll sind ?!?!?
Abwasser vom Klo…….is’ nich’……..wohin damit…..ist’n Festtank und bewegen koennen wir das gute Stueck nicht ………….also……….die kleine Schauffel und das Klopapier greifen und ab zum Morgenspaziergang in den Wald !!
“Geduscht” wird abends im See………Wetter ist der Hammer (staendig 25 – 28 Grad !) und das tolle ist ja………ist ja kein Mensch sonst am See, also wen juckt’s !!
Strom geht, denn wir haben uns einen grossen Generator gekauft, damit wenigstens die Pumpen und Licht gehen und die Batterien geladen werden.
Aber das Provisorium dauert “nur” bis wir endlich mit dem Camper auf’s Grundstueck koennen, eine Abwassergrube gelegt und ein Brunnen gebohrt ist, oder wir dann erstmal direkt Wasser aus dem See hochpumpen koennen…….also hoffentlich nur noch’n paar Wochen.
Freitag war schon ein Ingenieur hier und hat sich angesehen, ob’s Probleme gibt eine Abwassergrube zu setzen, denn ohne die Genehmigung, gibt’s auch keine Baugenehmigung, aber der meinte, das waere gar kein Problem.
Heute ist nun schon jemand mit einer 25 Tonnen Rodungsmaschine hier und macht alles platt was an Baeumen und Bueschen im Weg steht und den Rest der Woche kommt er dann mit anderen Maschinen, so dass das Gelaende, wo gebaut werden soll innerhalb der naechsten 1 ½ Wochen gerodet, gereinigt und aufgefuellt sein sollte………….dann bekommen wir auch einen besseren Blick dafuer, wo was hin kann, denn mit dem ganzen Wildwuchs hier, ist das gar nicht so einfach.
Ziel in den kommenden Wochen wird’s aber vorallem sein, den Camper winterfest zu bekommen, dazu werden wir ihn wohl voellig mit USB Platten umbauen und Isolierung zwischensetzen, denn sonst bekommen wir im Winter bestimmt ein Problem……….das Gute ist aber, dass wir die Platten und die Isolierung gleich dann fuer’s Haus weiterverwenden koennen und so sind zwei Fliegen mit einer Klappe geschlagen. Holzofen kommt auch noch rein und dann wird’s auf jedenfall kuschelig……….muss sein, denn trotz der hohen Tagestemperaturen faellt es nachts schon ab und heute nacht waren’s nur noch 12 Grad im Camper………..nicht schlimm, ich hab mir einfach meine vierbeinige Waermflasche ins Bett geholt und Frank merkt ja eh nix wenn er schlaeft !!
Dem Hund geht’s jedenfalls auch gut……..die Probleme mit den Pfoten scheinen sich zu bessern und sie steht den halben Tag im See und jagt Froesche und Fische !
Ihr seht also……….uns geht’s prima und wir haben unseren Spass !
Das soll’s dann erstmal gewesen sein……….\Wir hoffen, dass es Euch allen auch gut geht und wir melden uns dann bald wieder mal mit einem Update……
